Question: Imagine that you can talk for one hour with any person who has lived at any time in history. Which person would you choose to meet? Use specific details and examples to explain your choice.

Answer:
I want to choose the person who had a great effect. The person will teach me how he or she had done the result which most of people could not have done. I want to talk for one hour with Adolf Hitler.
One reason for this is that I think that I can learn from his about his talent. He succeeded to move people in Germany, and fight enemies which are most of country in the world at first. Germany where he was a leader was defeated indeed, but many German are impressed by his speech and believe the victory of Germany. It is difficult to have a great effect to many people, but he had done during his life. I want to ask him to teach me how he improved these talents.
Another reason is that although I have studied history, the history is on the side of victory countries in world war two. I want to know the history from the view of lost country, German. He must have the reasons why he decided to fight against almost all countries, and he wanted to kill Jews, despite he was a relative of Jew. It is certain that there are secret facts at that time. It is highly likely that he knew these facts, and I want to know the knowledge.
Many people dislike him. In fact, he ordered his army to kill many Jews. However, I think it is important to learn his personality and talent which had a great effect to world wide. He used his talent in wrong way, but we could use the similar talent which he had in good way, such as saving environment in the world wide effort.
The chance that I can talk with anyone unconditionally is great. I want to use this chance effectively, and lead to the result of my successful life.

Book Report

Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days, Oxford:Oxford University Press, 1992,89 pages

Summary:
One day, Mr. Fogg promised to five people that he would go around the world within eighty days. If he broke the promise, he had to pay twenty thousand pounds. However, if he made the promise come true, each member must pay four thousand pounds. He immediately returned to his house and made his servant go together. They stared to France at first. A bank of England was robbed of fifty thousand pounds a few days before they left London. Mr. Fogg was suspected by police, so the detective traced Fogg’s trip secretly. The route of the trip was very hard and dangerous. In India, he and his servant saw that some Hindus tried to burn a young lady with her dead husband. They rescued the lady and decided to join her to the trip. In America, they were attacked by Indians but they overcame the difficult situation. As a result, they finally succeed the world trip and, the fact that he was not thief was revealed. He married the beautiful woman who was in India. The brave and honesty man make the impossible plan real.

Setting: the world in 1872

Point of View: third person

Conflict: Fogg was in conflict with his servant, detective and the world environment to work out his promise.

Climax: Mr. Fogg believed that he delayed the promised time. He was deeply depressed, but he only misunderstood the date, so he could reach the promised place in the promised time exactly. The detective who had traced Mr. Fogg convinced that Fogg was the thief, but a thief who stool the money from the bank of England was captured by police before they came back to England. This mean was that Mr. Fogg was not thief. The lady who was likely to be burned in India offered to marry him with happy.

Symbol: A brave is the symbol of this story. Without the brave, Mr. Fogg would not achieve his plan. There were many difficulties during his trip, but he behaved bravely against each difficult situation. The brave led him the success.

Irony: The world trip within eighty days was thought to be impossible at that time. But, Mr. Fogg made the trip possible despite of many difficult situations he faced.

Theme: The theme of this book is “ Be brave and you will succeed.” Mr. Fogg’s trip was sometimes interrupted by some characters or situations, and he didn’t have time enough to succeed his trip, nevertheless he justified his belief. For example, he saved the beautiful young lady who was likely to be burned. Finally he married her. To be brave is important.

Evaluation:
This story is very interesting. The character in the story went to different country. The author described well the environment in the late of nineteenth century. As for me, I am interested in the world trip. I learned never- give- up belief from this novel. I want to behave like Mr. Fogg someday when I trip around the world. In this way I thought this novel was good, but I had a few complaints. First, it seemed that native Indians or Hindus was barbarous. I felt the writer discriminate them consciously or unconsciously. Second, there were too many happy-end in this story. Although characters faced some difficult situations, it was certain that they overcame the problem. I know real world is harder than this story. The thought led this novel unreal and boring. Of course, I know all novels should not be serious. I simply felt that this novel was not real but fun.

Book Report 2

Dickens, Charles, Oliver Twist, IBC publishing, 2006, 111 pages.

Summary:
Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. He had no relatives. He was mistreated by people in the workhouse, so he decided to go to London to escape from there. He reached London on foot, but he was very tired and needed a place to sleep. He accidentally met Fagin who was a criminal in London and Fagin provided Oliver a bed. Oliver appreciated him and he followed what Fagin said. Fagin said to Oliver that some children enjoyed a game which is generally called pickpocketing. Fagin made Oliver play the game, but Oliver was captured by the police when other children played the game. Fortunately his innocence was proven and he became the family member of an upper-class man whose name was Mr. Brownlow. However, the happy life did not last so long. Fagin ordered to kidnap him when he was asked to buy books. He had to come back to the house of Fagin. When he performed the job as a robber, he was shot by gun. Other robber thought that he would die, but he survived. He finally arrived at the house of Mr. Brownlow, and the fact that Oliver was the son of Mr. Brownlow’s niece was clear. He became a gentleman and was respected by everybody. In contrast, Fagin was arrested and hanged because of his criminal offenses.

Setting: London in the 19th century

Point of View: This story is told from third person.

Conflict: Oliver was in conflict with the crime. He was obliged to perform pickpocketing, but he refused to do it. Of course it is difficult for him to resist to evil adults.

Climax: Fagin tried to run away from the police, because His criminal offenses were revealed by Oliver. His crime which was to steal valuable things by using poor children was not allowed, so he was captured and hanged.

Symbol: A small golden locket is the symbol in the story. It truly connected Oliver with Mr. Brownlow because Mr. Brownlow could find that Oliver was his relative.

Irony: Oliver was thought of as a poor boy, but he was the relative of a rich man, Mr. Brownlow.

Theme: Sin and penalty are the theme in the story. Man should receive penalty if he sins. Fagin and other villains robbed valuable things of some people by using children. The criminal was the worst things as a human being. He was punished by the death penalty.

Evaluation: The story finished as a happy ending. Oliver escaped from his poor life, and he became a respectful man. However, he was like a devil thinking of the position of the villain. Of course the villain is the villain. I could not affirm the position, but when I thought the young children were with the villain, things were not simple. As for the children, they could not live, if they did not rob anything. If the rich existed, the poor did inevitably. Oliver became a rich and respectful man certainly, but the poor children were still poor and lived in the worst situation. They would be captured, if they were found. Moreover, they would live in jail for a long time. I thought they were not bad. The social system and adults were bad. Unfortunately, I am becoming an adult.

Book Report 3

(1)
Stoker, Bram. Dracula. First. Ireland: IBC, 2006.179p

(2)
If I am the author in this book, I will write three women’s vampire differently. These vampires do not play important role in the story, but I have more interesting idea by changing the background of three vampires. One of three vampires had a boy friend who is one of characters in the story, and was very happy. One day, however, she was taken away by Count Dracula. She forced him to become vampire. The boy friend wanted to find out her, but he decided to give up searching her at last. Then, they meet again in Dracula’s castle by chance. They might feel rip current in this situation. This is what I want to write the most. In the same reason, if I am Holmwood who is fiancé of Lucy, I cannot kill her in the tough situation that she becomes a vampire, and she begins to attack to human. I will feel the conflict in my mind.
Page 150 “ All of this has not been in vain” the situation is that people finally defeat Count Dracula, and the effect that the vampire made is gone. The reason why I choose this part is I believe that all efforts are meaningful. There is nothing wasteful in our lives despite in the case of either success of object or lost of object.

(3)
Setting: Mainly at Transylvania and London

Point of view: First person, diary form

Conflict: Count Dracula, a vampire had a bad effect to people. The vampire could become a dog, bat even mist. The creature came to each person who is a prey of it, and sucked human’s blood. The vampire could create his fellows who used to human being, by sucking the human’s blood. Mina Harker near to become his fellow, but the husband of Mina and his companion saved Mina from the danger of Dracula.

Climax: Dracula was undead during the night moreover he could become other living form such as bat. People could easily conclude that it was impossible for human to defeat the vampire, but they found that the vampire was weak in day time. They traced the vampire’s track and finally reached the vampire before the night came. They killed the vampire. As a result, the manipulated people or animals including Mina became sane.

Symbol: Crucifix is the symbol in the story. Crucifix makes a vampire weak when the vampire sees it. The vampire cannot be close to them, if they have it. Another good aspect of it is that people can rely on it even if it does not actually cheer them up. It makes people stronger mentally, when they want to feel to escape from their tough situation that they should defeat undead monster.

Irony: Lucy Westenra who is a friend of Mina was sucked by Dracula. People wanted to save her and stop her from becoming a vampire. The efforts would be well done, and they can handle with the danger, but unfortunately the efforts are in vain. She at last became the vampire, and began to suck other people’s blood. They sadly had to decide to kill her before she continued to commit the crime.

Theme: The cooperation is theme in the story. There is a monster which is strong and powerful in the story. The monster makes people unhappy. It seems that people cannot win the battle against the monster, but people cooperate with the case. Finally they defeat the monster.

(4)
I think that the story has roughly two sides that are human and monster. I want to talk about two different positions. At first, I will mention the view from human. In the story, there is a monster, but in real world I believe that that kind of monsters are nothing. Maybe monsters are extinct through the history, because people won the survival against monsters. I was shocked at the author who creates the monster which sucks human’s blood, and makes a new monster. The imagination is notable. His motif is from(e) I learn a passage from the story. The passage is “never give up until you make it” It is easy for human to escape from tough situation, but people in this story fight bravely against monsters. The monsters attacked Lucy who was young lady and I think that the lady should be saved. Unexpectedly, however, she became a vampire, despite the efforts by people. She started to suck blood from someone. When people saw the sight, they decided to kill her in spite of being person who loved her.
I mention the position from human in above sentences. I want to talk about vampire’s view. Human can be cruel, if they know that they are likely to be harmed. Human can kill person who attacks it, even if the human love the attacking person. At the same time, vampires want to save their lives. If vampires cannot suck human’s blood, they will extinct from the world. The author takes only sides with people not vampires. It seems that the position of author is correct. However there is a tragic past in vampire’s life maybe. The view from vampires is needed to profound this story. It seems that Van Helsing is likely to understand vampires. He is a professor who studies about supernatural phenomenon. His life against the monster is envious, because he experienced more interesting things than I. when I make film, I want to pick up Van Helsing who fights against supernatural phenomenon. His attitude toward mystery in the world is interesting. His life or background is mysterious. It inspires me to create film.

Integrated Writing Task
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Two principal types of tests are used in secondary schools, and, in all types of schools. One type is the objective test. Different types of questions can be asked on objective test: multiple choice, fill in the blanks, true-or-false, matching, and so on. The other type of test is the subjective test, or essay test. This type of test asks students to write essays on one or more topics.
Although objective tests continue to be used in many high school classrooms, today the essay test is most often used because it tests a higher level of understanding. Objective tests simply test a student’s ability to memorize dates, names, and other facts. Essay tests, on the other hand, require students to organize and analyze, to see relationships, and to present information in a clear way. This is much more realistic task than any presented in an objective test. In real life, of course, questions will not be presented in a multiple-choice format; instead, they require students to organize and communicate their thoughts in a logical way.
Essay exams emphasize to high school students the need to express themselves clearly and effectively in writing. Everyone agrees this is a necessary skill for all students at all levels and in all disciplines. And if teachers in history classes give essay exams, they encourage their students to apply themselves with more enthusiasm in their compositions classes. Besides, as a bonus for the busy teacher, essay exams take far less time to construct than objective tests.

Now, listen to a lecture for 2 minutes.
You can use the rest of this page as a memo.

Question:
Summarize the main points made in the lecture that you just heard, discussing how they cast doubt on points made in the reading. You can refer to the reading passage as you write. (20 minutes, 200 words)

àThe speaker says that it is best to use combination of the objective test and the subjective test. In the reading text, the writer says that the subjective test is better than the objective test. The subjective test can be useful in some aspects, for example students need to organize and analyze their ideas and express themselves clearly and effectively.[YN1]
改行Although speaker admits the benefits of the subjective test, he says some problems of the type of test. One problem is that students may get a high score nonetheless they do not memorize the fundamental knowledge of the writing topic. Another problem is that there is no clear value frame in the essay test, so the writing grade is different in each teacher the writing papers check. The objective test is suitable in the class which is in[YN2] many students. Teachers can score their objective test automatically[YN3] . In this case, the objective test is useful. The essay test, however, it is suitable to use[YN4] in small class. In conclusion, teacher should use the two types of test in their suitable situation.

Some people believe that zoos serve useful functions. Other people believe that it is cruel and wrong to confine animals in zoos. Tell which point of view you agree with and explain why, using details and reasons.

→ I prefer the statement that zoos serve useful functions to the statement that confining animals in zoos is cruel and wrong. I want to justify my opinion in following passages.
I have two reasons why I choose the opinion. One reason is that zoos make people fun. People in the city can watch in zoo various animals which they can’t see in their daily life. Those people are apart from nature, and they rarely see wild animals. The situation is not usual for human being historically. There were many animals around human in past time, so people want to watch them, and they are interested in them.
Another reason is that animals in zoos contribute to studying biology for researchers. While Cities have lavatories or universities to study biology, it is tough for researchers of biology to observe animal’s behavior which helps their study. To solve this problem, researchers can observe all life of animals in zoos from being born to dying.
Some people say that it is cruel and wrong to confine animals in zoos. The opinion seems to be right, but animals are saved from danger. Wild animals always face tough situations. They do not know when they are attacked. On the other hand, animals in zoo do not need to be worried about the situation. Animals may be happy in zoos
People in the city tend to take less time to watch animals. They should not forget nature object. Zoos provide the useful time to watch animals. I think it is important for human being.
